BREAKING NEWS: Municipality working around the clock to find a solution to KZN South Coast lifeguard strike

The affected beaches are Hibberdene, Umzumbe, Southport, Uvongo, Manaba, Margate, Ramsgate and Port Edward.

Lifeguards have gone on strike today (December 24) at a string of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s (RNM) beaches.
The affected beaches so far are: Hibberdene, Umzumbe, Southport, Uvongo, Manaba, Margate, Ramsgate and Port Edward.
Lifeguards have apparently ‘downed tools’ after not being paid for days in August and in September. They furthermore told the Herald that they have not received their “Christmas money”.
Simon April of RNM said he is aware of the problem with lifeguard services at some of its beaches.
“It is as a result of the service provider having problems with its staff members. RNM is urging them to fix the problem while exploring alternatives,” he said.
April said they are finding alternative ways to resolving this issue.
“We have since been able to open Marina and Trafalgar Beaches and we anticipate to re-open Port Edward very soon.”
He assured that they are working around the clock to ensure that all the beaches are open.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this unfortunate and unprecedented  incident,” he said.
