Garment to spread awareness on women and child abuse launched

Zibar boutique creates awareness and supports charity organisations for 16 Days of activism

Gamalakhe-born fashion designer, Phumla Nxumalo, has always had a heart for the vulnerable and has wanted to be involved in the community.

With a collaboration with non-governmental organisations in Margate, Nxumalo has initiated a 16 Day of Activism Against Women and Children campaign where she came up with an idea to design and sew a garment that spreads a message and creates awareness of no violence against women and children.

She said the dress is made from pieces of material donated by young girls and children from local shelters, a rehab centre and members of the community symbolising their experiences and stories.

They were all used to design a dress with a difference.

The garment was showcased during the launch of the campaign last Friday, which was attended by Margate Saps, Waynol Anti-Narcotics Agency, Inkanyezi Models, Phenduka – Turn Your Life Around, KZN South Coast Hotspots, African Faith Mission Church and Give a Child Family.

Together, the stakeholders raised awareness of the impact that gender-based violence has on society and what they are doing and will continue doing to make an impact in the lives of struggling families, children, and adults.

Phumla said the highlight of the launch was when Mandy Ngcobo from Inkanyezi Models modeled the beautiful dress on the street outside Zibar Clothing for the world to see.

She urged members of the community to support her 16 Days of Activism drive where she will be collecting toiletries for women and babies, toys, and non-perishable food which can be dropped off at the Zibar Boutique at 9 Central Court, Marine Drive, Margate.

The specially designed garment is made from material pieces donated by various women and children’s organisations, modeled by Mandy Ngcobo of Inkanyezi Models.

“The collection will end on 10 December and distributions will be made to the various benefiting organisations at a later stage. The sponsors will also get a chance to see the 16 Days of Activism garment which is on Display at the boutique,” said Nxumalo

Anyone wishing to drop off items or needs more information can contact Phumla at 063 220 5671.
