Man found burnt to death in car – four sentenced to 20 years in jail each

The identity of the dead man is still unknown, even nearly four years later.

The four men involved in the murder of an unknown man – who was found burnt in a vehicle in Gamalakhe in February 2019 – were sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court this week to 20 years’ imprisonment each.

They are Matomela Dwetye (37), Andile Mkhize (27), Smangaliso Hlophe (27) and Thobani Msomi (27).

They were also sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment each for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The sentences will run concurrently.

At the time of the incident, police, in responding to the scene, found the man burnt in the vehicle, which had been hidden in the bush near a shooting range in Gamalakhe.

Police investigations linked the four men to the crime and and they were arrested a few days later.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said that several court appearances by the accused resulted in a deserved sentence.

Investigating officer was Detective Sergeant Mlungisi Jabe of Gamalakhe Detective Service.
