Taxi association opens new office

Mtwalume taxi owners will officially open the doors of their newly built office in Nyangwini.

The Mtwalume Taxi Association in partnership with the regional chairperson of the South African National Taxi Council, Lizwi Maphumulo invites the community to the official launch of its new office in Nyangwini, next to Sibanini Primary School on Thursday, November 24 at 10:00.

It is the first offices built by the association since it was founded in the late 80s.
The chairman, Bhekumuzi Gumede said the association has over 300 taxis, and money collected daily from each taxi was used to build the office.

Gumede said the building project took about three months to complete. It will serve as the community’s ‘go to’ office whenever there are queries about routes, and when commuters need to communicate with management.
“The association has also purchased walkie-talkies to manage the daily routes and keep track of the drivers 24/7, ” said Gumede.

He said he is aware that commuters witness monies being collected from taxi drivers, but they are unsure where the money goes.

“The launch will be an opportunity to tell the community what we do with the money, and that building our own office is just one of the projects initiated with the funds. We have over the years also donated to projects such as a uniform drive where we purchase school uniforms for children in need. This project is in partnership with our local schools that provide us with a list of children,” Gumede explained.

He said he hopes that the community comes in numbers to witness the official opening of the office, some 35 years after the association was formed.

Lunch will be served after all the formalities.
