Motorists reminded to be safe on roads

Make sure that you have your licence and that your tyres and vehicle are roadworthy.

In an effort to curb carnage on South Coast roads, motorists are reminded to check their vehicles regularly, and to buckle up before embarking on a journey.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza together with Umdoni Municipality Mayor and Park Rynie Road Traffic Inspectorate conducted a roadblock on the N2, close to the Park Rynie offramp, checking vehicle licence discs, driver’s licences and roadworthiness of vehicles.

Provincial Chief Inspector of RTI, Bheki Zondi (left) with MEC for Social Development and Ugu champion, Nomusa Khoza check a vehicle’s licence disc.

Khoza said the initiative was part of the province’s Office of the Premier Programmes for October which is Transport Month.

“This operation was aimed at reminding motorists to be safe on our roads, especially with the high number of accidents in the province. We stopped vehicles and found that many motorists are driving without licences and that they don’t wear seatbelts,” said Khoza.

She said a number of motorists were penalised for various reasons – unroadworthy tyres, cracked windscreens and driving cars with expired licence discs.

Khoza encouraged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
After the roadblock the MEC and her delegation visited Umzinto Hall to hand over food parcels to 50 families identified during a previous visit to the area.
