Eco-warriors clean-up beach

Some 30 eco-warriors participated in this year's International Coastal Clean-up Day.

Every year on the third Saturday of September, volunteers around the world take part in the world’s biggest coastal clean-up – International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD).

Local volunteers joined in the annual clean-up event at the Wild Coast Sun’s Mzamba Beach, with more than 30 eco-warriors taking part.

The event has been held internationally each year since 1986 when people head to the beaches and remove debris and rubbish from shorelines, waterways, and the oceans. The ICCD initiative remains the largest volunteer environmental data-gathering effort and clean-up event of coastal and underwater areas to date.

Each participant received an indigenous plant in commemoration of Arbor Day.

As September was also Arbor month, each participant in the local beach clean-up event received an indigenous tree as a gift of appreciation from the Wild Coast Sun.

After the clean-up, local entrepreneurs showcased and sold eco-products such as vegetables, herbs and innovative items made from waste material at the eco-market, where Ithuba Community College impressed with their innovative upcycled art products.

Commenting on this years clean-up, Wild Coast Sun’s general manager, Peter Tshidi said they are proud to play a role in not only keeping the environment clean, but stressing the importance thereof to the local communities and guests.
