Record number of snares found on Umzumbe farm

The next patrol will be on a farm in South port this Sunday, October 23 at 10:00.

A shocking 91 snares were found and removed in two hours by South Coast Anti-Snaring Group on a farm in Umzumbe last Sunday.

It was the highest number of snares found to date, in one snare patrol.

This grave number of snares placed on one farm is very concerning for the coast’s wildlife, which is under threat from poaching.

Craig Saunders heads up the group and is trying his utmost best to save the coast’s wildlife. He says the reason he thinks there are so many snares around is because of three informal settlements in the vicinity of the farm . Also, due to unemployment people have no choice but to poach.

Many snares were removed from a farm in Umzumbe.

“We have only covered a tiny percentage of this farm and the plan is to come back in the future, with more eyes and help we can cover a greater area.”

The next patrol will be on a farm in Southport this Sunday (23rd) at 10:00.

They will be covering the bushes along the farm and trying to remove as many snares as possible. There is a lot of bush to cover, so the more hands on board the better.

“We will meet on the farm, a location will be provided by pin drop. Bring a backpack, refreshments, snacks, long pants, takkies or hiking boots, bushknife if you have one, side cutters or pliers,” said Craig.

They have first aid bags and radios on hand for the volunteers that join.
