Rotary DG visits projects at learning centre

The Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast has been involved with this school since 2014 and over the years had a few projects.

A club visit from a Rotary District Governor is the perfect time to highlight projects.

Rotary District Governor Gavin Jepson, Assistant Governor Rowan D’Arcy, President Cathy de Boer and fellow Rotarians were all warmly greeted by principal Tammy Smulders and the Founder Principal Sheryl Mulder when they visited Cornerstone Learning Centre recently.

The highlight of the visit was enjoying listening to the South African National Anthem, Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika, sung beautifully and signed in Makaton, a language programme that uses signs, symbols and speech; giving a person different options when communicating.

The Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast has been involved with this school since 2014 and over the years, had a few projects done including; tiling of floors in the admin block, donation towards the installation of swings and senior class jungle gym, the donation of stove and fridge towards new skills curriculum and of a laptop for the office and five flat-screen computers for the classes.

The club also re-thatched two garden umbrellas and in 2018 sponsored the attendance of two Makathon Foundation courses, attended by both Tammy and Sheryl.

The course has been instrumental in enabling many of the Cornerstone teachers to get the autism-specific training they need over the past few years.

This year’s donation from Rotary Hibiscus Coast is for Tammy to attend a Makaton Tutor Training in Cape Town in October 2022.

“As a Makaton tutor, attending the training will be beneficial to the wider community on the South Coast who work with children with disabilities and who often struggle with communication difficulties as well” said Tammy.
