Umdoni to transform ‘drug den’ to state-of-the-art facility

The new grounds are expected to be completed next year.

It is known by many that the Umzinto sports field in Ward 13 has been used as a drug den for a long time.

Umdoni Municipality has been made aware of this and officials are now in the process of carrying out a project to successfully halt the usage of this ground for these illegal activities.

A sod turning ceremony led by mayor Sibongile Khathi was done this week, to officially mark the beginning of the multi-million rand rehabilitation project.

The sports facility is expected to be transformed to a state-of-the-art facility which will be enjoyed by the Umdoni community as the central home ground.

There will be an upgrade of the main football field; renovations of the building which consists of offices, changerooms and ablution facilities; installation of vehicle and pedestrian access gate; renovation to the security booth, renovation to the combi-court surface and installation of equipment; installation of storm water drainage system; upgrade of floodlights; installation of floodlights for the combi-court; electricity and water connection to the facility; repair of the concrete palisade fencing; repair of spectator grandstand; installation of new outdoor gym; installation of wire fencing for the combi-court and installation of a turf irrigation system.

This facility will be guarded at all times to avoid repetition of acts of vandalism and its usage in the advancement of social ills.

Mayor Khathi highlighted that a lot of resources have previously gone to waste as result of theft and vandalism among others.

“We condemn such acts that seek to derail our municipality’s community development plan, and I plead with the community to ensure this facility is well looked after,” she said.

This project is set to be completed by June next year.
