ANC councillor gunned down in Mvutshini

The funeral will take place this Saturday.

An eThekwini councillor, Mnqobi ‘Gah’ Molife (39) was gunned down in Mvutshini area near Margate, last Sunday.

Molife was an ANC councillor in ward 99 in Magabheni.

He was with his partner at the time of the incident.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said three armed suspects forced a door open and entered a room, shot and fatally wounded Molife, leaving his partner unharmed.

“The suspects fled without taking anything. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.”

A source said the three unknown men were dressed in police uniforms and balaclavas and allegedly demanded a gun from Molife but he didn’t have one, they then shot him in the head.

Regional spokesperson for the ANC, Mlondi Mkhize said the authorities must make this incident a priority case.

“Molife’s family is traumatised.”

Mkhize said that they don’t know the motive behind the murder but mentioned that there were challenges in Ward 99 due to a dam being built by Umgeni Water.

He alleged that Molife is not the first person to be shot while being involved in the project.

“Molife was not only a councillor but a community leader and he was involved in the traditional leadership of the area.”

The councillor’s brother, Sbonelo Molife said the family is very hurt and saddened.

He said things are not easy and the worst thing is that he left behind three children, and the youngest is aged one.

“We were still expecting more from him, he was just elected as a councillor, there was so much that the community was expecting from him. It is known people were following him and he had reported it, he was even provided with bodyguards because everyone knew that he was being targeted.”

Molife’s funeral will take place this Saturday.

According to police, a case of murder was opened at Margate police station for investigation.
