Praise for NSRI for saving lives during floods

NSRI recognised the training, professionalism and ethos the crew at the stations executed to save multiple lives.

NSRI Station 32 Port Edward and Station 20 Shelly Beach were recently commended for their prompt and effective action during the devastating floods in April.

The NSRI celebrated its dedicated volunteers and other individuals who risk their lives to save the lives of others at its 55th annual awards evening in Knysna.

NSRI’s chairman of the board, Ronnie Stein (left) hands the award to station commander Gary Wolmarans of Station 20 Shelly Beach.

The Meritorious Service Award was handed to both local stations, including Station 39 Rocky Bay, for the prompt and effective action taken by members of the stations to assist, along with the national and local emergency services, in multiple flood-related incidents, along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline and inland, caused by heavy rainfall and the devastating floods in Durban and surrounding areas from April 11 to 13.

During the period from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021 the NSRI conducted 1025 rescue operations, and rescued 960 people and 41 animals.
