History book on Oribi Commando launched

The launch attracted an interested group of folk.

It has taken some time and endured some obstacles, but Lieutenant-Colonel Laurence Palmer has finally launched his book Oribi Commando: An Official History.

This took place at Cinder City Shellhole in Sea Park last Friday.

The book documents the history of the commando and its antecedent and associated units, 1865 to 2007.

It includes letters and old black and white photographs, plus numerous newspaper clippings

It truly has been a labour of love as the retired Lt-Col has put into print something the current folk can enjoy and future ones learn from.

Palmer was in charge of the Commando and Sector South Coast from 1980 to 1991,

The book is the culmination of much work over many years, and the fruit of his determination to record and publish the history of the commando.

Having served as its commanding officer from 1980 to 1991, and in particular the last five years as officer commanding Sector South Coast, he was a key figure in the unit.

Palmer has already started to write a second book on his own career.
