Gcilima women shot dead

It was the second tragedy for the family in the space of a few weeks.

A man is under police guard in hospital after he allegedly shot dead his girlfriend in Margate on Sunday morning (October 6).

He also shot the man she was with at the time.

Sdumisile Shonga (30) from Gcilima was declared dead on the scene. The man sustained a gunshot wound but is alive.

The shooter’s name is known to the South Coast Herald but has not been published as he has not yet been charged or appeared in court.

He is believed to be a member of the Port Shepstone Public Order Policing Crew Unit.

Saps spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said police in Margate are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and culpable homicide.

Netshiunda explained that, according to reports, the man fled the scene after the shooting.

He drove north on the highway. Near Sea Park, he collided with a truck.

“During this collision, a man (51) was knocked down by the vehicle and died on the scene.”

The shooter was injured and taken to hospital.

Shonga’s sister, Samke Shonga, spoke to the Herald and described the horror of it all.

She said everything happened so fast.

Shonga explained that the night before, a group of them had been in Margate to watch a soccer match and came back home quite late.

She was with her sister, their cousin who had come to visit for the weekend, and her sister’s new boyfriend.

“We were still sleeping when we heard a very aggressive knock on the door, at around 06:00. My sister woke up first and went to check, while I was changing.”

She said while she was getting dressed she recognised the voice and knew who it was.

She could hear some sort of an argument and went to try and break it up.

Shonga said she saw the man pulling her sister out of the house, and then shoot her. She said he then walked in to shoot the other man.

“My sister had broken up with him. She had moved out from his place at the beginning of September and we decided to find a place to rent in Margate, so we were now staying together.”

Shonga said the couple had been in a relationship for about four years and had no children together.

She said her family was traumatised.

“My sister was an independent woman who took care of her two boys.”

It’s the second tragedy in a short space of time. Only two weeks ago, the family buried their older sister who had died from illness.
