Man struck with a stone after by-election

Five people have appeared in court and police are conducting further investigations.

Port Shepstone police are investigating a case of assault after Mxolisi Madlala was allegedly struck with a stone in Louisiana after a recent by-election.

At the time, Madlala was waiting for the results for Ward 14.

He said after the results were announced, he heard a commotion from his political party, the MK and ANC members.

“As the branch coordinator, I went to see what was happening, and I then looked for the ANC’s voting district co-ordinator to ask him what was the issue. We then moved to the site of the commotion to calm the people down, and that was when I was hit on the head,” said Madlala.

As he was bleeding, Madlala went to the hospital and opened a case the next morning.

Tolomane Mnyayiza Region’s ANC spokesperson, Wendy Mqadi, said as the party, they always preach peace, especially when there are such elections.

“We ask our members and every other political member to be patient with each other because such incidents scare away regular voters,” said Mqadi.

She said that at this stage, they will let the police deal with the matter.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.

“Port Shepstone police have opened a case of assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm after the complainant was allegedly assaulted with a stone at a local school in Louisiana after the local by-election had concluded.”

Netshiunda said a counter charge of common assault was also registered.

He said five suspects appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on September 16, and the cases have been postponed for further investigation.
