Teen in court on attempted murder charge

The incident happened in July in Makhoso area in Mtwalume.

A boy, aged 17, will appear in Port Shepstone Regional Court on August 27 on a charge of attempted murder after a girl (6) was allegedly assaulted in Mtwalume recently.

At the time of the incident, which occurred on July 9, the girl was walking home from school when she was allegedly accosted by two unknown men.

This will be the boy’s first appearance at Port Shepstone, as he has previously appeared in Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court.

Women of Mtwalume, a non-profit, community members and a local forum are adamant the boy should not be granted bail.

The mother of the victim said that her daughter was on her way home from school when she was snatched and taken into bushes.

She said after the assault, her daughter was able to run to a neighbour who took her home.

It is alleged that the teenager is also linked to the rape and murder of Sinethemba Ngcece Sibiya (8).

So far, the families of both victims have not been allowed in court to hear the proceedings.
