‘Cell’ time for gang

They were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Five men were sentenced in the Port Shepstone Regional Court recently for cellphone theft.

The gang comprised Prince Sehlono (26), Vusi Muzi Madondo (30), Wandile Mthethwa (34), Lawrence Mfundo Thwala (30) and Sboniso Nkosingiphile Dlamini (43).

They robbed a cellphone outlet in Shelly Beach at gunpoint on June 13, 2021.

They were convicted of aggravated robbery and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment each, five years suspended.

They were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The gang was arrested at a roadblock in Scottburgh on the same day of the robbery. All the stolen property was recovered.

Sehlono managed to flee the scene but was arrested a few days later, on June 26.

All men were denied bail and remained in police custody throughout their long trial.

The case was investigated by Detective Sergeant Morné Jones of Port Shepstone Detective Service.
