Elderly disabled man attacked in Port Edward

The intruder came to the house under the pretense of getting a drink of water.

A 30-year-old man was arrested last week in connection with a violent knife attack on Port Edward resident Kevin Wasserfall (68)

The disabled pensioner, who is deaf, was severely injured when he was attacked in his home in Ogilvy Road recently.

Wasserfall is currently recovering in the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

According to the Saps Corporate Communication office, it’s alleged the intruder came to the house under the pretence of getting a drink of water.

“The man stabbed the pensioner and locked him in a room. He then took the keys to a VW Golf and fled in the vehicle. The injured resident escaped through a window and sought help from a neighbour,” said Saps.

Hendrik Ludick of Airtrack X-Treme Security said their teams responded within minutes and immediately called paramedics, including NSRI medics, and the police.

“The victim suffered severe lacerations to his abdomen and wrist,” said Ludick.

Wasserfall was transported to hospital, and the stolen vehicle was later recovered in Tongazi near Leisure Bay.

Ludick said this was the third attack on the man who appeared to be targeted by the perpetrator.

He praised his team and paramedics from NSRI, Netcare 911 and Med-Evac for the quick response and teamwork.

Wasserfall’s nephew, Colin Wasserfall, said they are still shocked that such a violent attack could happen to such a vulnerable person.

He commended Port Edward Saps station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Satish Premchand and his team for the swift arrest of the suspect.

“Col Premchand clearly has a dedicated team committed to community safety and fighting crime. Also, we would like to thank the regional hospital for taking care of Kevin despite the shortage of ICU space,” he said.

“I believe that if a community stands together and forms a safety structure with Saps and security companies, they can create a safe environment for everyone to prevent these types of incidents, and I hope that those people prepared to stand up will do so now, especially after this incident.”
