Firearms recovered at informal settlement

Both firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of any crimes.

Two unlicensed firearms were recovered when Port Shepstone Detective Service recently traced a man (35) to his home in the Mkholombe informal settlement near Bhobhoyi.

A spokesman said the detectives searched his home on May 9 and found a 9mm pistol under a pillow.

Further searching revealed another firearm, which it seems belonged to a deceased man from Umtata in the Eastern Cape.

Both firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine if they were used in the commission of any crimes.

The man appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court last Friday on a charge of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The case has been postponed to September 10.

Port Shepstone Station Commander, Brigadier Nonhlanhla Dhlamuka, appealed to the public to make their communities safer by reporting unlicensed or illegal firearms to the police.
