Girl raped and strangled

The accused has appeared in court and remains in police custody.

A 32-year-old man recently appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape, attempted murder and kidnapping.

A case was opened at Paddock Saps after a 10-year-old girl was raped on February 3.

According to police, the man wanted to buy cigarettes, and after the girl pointed out the shop to him, he alleged that he didn’t know where it was and that she must accompany him.

She asked her relative, a younger boy, to go along with them.

The man then sent the boy away and took the girl to a sports ground, where he strangled and raped her. After regaining consciousness, she sought help from the nearest home.

Police began an intense search for the man, and he was arrested by the Saps K9 and Public Order Policing units in Umlazi, Durban, on February 10.

His next court appearance is on May 3. He remains in police custody.
