Taxi boss gunned down

SCH Local News | Khayalethu Gumede (57) operated his business under the Gamalakhe Taxi Association.

The family of slain taxi owner Khayalethu Gumede, who was shot 21 times at his Betania home on Monday evening last week, said they are unable to erase images of the incident that they witnessed.

Gumede (57) operated his business under the Gamalakhe Taxi Association.

KZN police was repeatedly requested for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.

Gumede’s niece, who did not want to be named, said they saw him being shot by an unknown man who fled the scene.

“It was Easter Monday, just after supper, and my uncle had left the main house to go to his outside room. After a few minutes, we heard him arguing with someone and then shots being fired. He fell down, and the gunman continued shooting him.”

The family closed their doors and were unable to help him, but witnessed everything through a window.

Also, they are unable to identify the shooter who murdered their father and uncle.

“After the man fled, we went outside, and we could tell that he had died.”

According to the family, they don’t know the motive for the shooting.
Gumede is survived by his wife and four children.
