Police and private security arrest cable thief

Be alert, and if you see people digging or acting suspicious contact the police, your local Crime Prevention Forum or security company to check.

Cable theft is becoming a daily occurrence.

This comes after a cable thief was recently arrested and handed over to the police, thanks to the rapid response of security companies.

A report came through on the Umtentweni Crime Prevention Forum (CPF) WhatsApp group that three men were seen stripping cables on the railway line close to the Port Shepstone Country Club.

Members from Saps dog unit, Umtentweni CPF members, Fidelity Special Intelligence Unit and other security partners immediately responded.

The alleged thieves were tracked on the railway line towards Batstones low level bridge.
Hendrik Gericke, Fidelity ADT South Coast branch manager said that when spotted, the men ran into the bushes towards the Mzimkulu River.

“The area was blocked off by all involved and the men were then tracked along the river towards Batstones. One man was found in the bush and admitted to stealing the cables. The other two managed to get away. He was handed over to Saps Port Shepstone dog unit together with some of the stolen cable that was also recovered,” said Gericke.

“Thanks to a detailed description provided, our teams were able to make an arrest and recover stolen cable,” he said.

He further added that it’s important to be able to provide a thorough description of a suspect to authorities to assist them in positively identifying and apprehending them.

Also, take note of a suspect’s height, clothing, nationality, build and any distinguishing features such as scars, a limp and/or tattoos.
