Rapists convicted at Scottburgh court

Both victims were teenagers.

Stanley Mgqashiyo (57) and Bhekani Mabhiza Chiliza (34) were sentenced and convicted at the Scottburgh Regional Court for separate rape cases recently.

Mgqashiyo was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of raping a thirteen-year-old in the KwaCele area on June 15.

The child reported the crime to her mother and stated that the elderly man was known to the family.

“The family did not hesitate to report the incident to police who arrested the man, and the matter proceeded swiftly at court due to concise investigation,” said Scottburgh communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

In another case during October and November 2013 in Malangeni, Umzinto, a child who was fourteen-years-old at the time was threatened with a knife wielded by a man well-known to her family and raped.

“Initial attempts to report the rape were unsuccessful, however this did not deter the investigating officer, Detective Constable Elisa Mbhele of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit from getting first hand reports and interviews from witnesses after the rape was reported to police,” explained Captain Francis.

The matter was handled at court and Chiliza received 20 years’ imprisonment.
Detective Constable Mbhele is applauded for the thorough investigations and securing both convictions.
