Sheppie cop arrested for dealing in drugs

The arrest of a Sheppie cop comes after big drug busts in Durban.

There is a move by the police, including the Hawks, to stamp out corruption and drug trafficking in the province.
Hawks spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said this is evident in the recent big drug busts that have been made in Durban.

Last month police seized cocaine worth an estimated R70m from a vessel at the Durban Harbour.

This was followed by a second major bust where police confiscated cocaine worth about R80m from a warehouse at the King Shaka International Airport.

On the KZN South Coast, Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation arrested Constable Dilan Jama (25) for dealing in drugs, possession of drugs and possession of unlicensed ammunition last month.

Mhlongo said members received information about a police official who was dealing in cannabis around Port Shepstone.

“An intelligence driven investigation was conducted and he was arrested on Monday, October 30,” he confirmed.
During the arrest members seized cannabis with a street value of about R27 900 and 27 9mm live rounds of ammunition.

He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 31 and was released on bail of R2000.
The case was postponed to November 27.

Mhlongo said the fight against corruption and drug trafficking is a long and difficult one but the recent successes in Durban are a hopeful sign of seriousness.
