Hit-and-run driver arrested

The victim was a 28-year-old woman.

A 28-year-old woman died after being struck by a vehicle in Main Harding Road recently, and the driver (34) who had fled the scene was arrested in Marburg later the same day.

Lazer911’s Jaco Smit said a witness informed them of the direction the driver had fled. He and his colleague started a search towards Skogheim and after some time headed back to the Marburg industrial area, where they found the vehicle with a shattered windscreen, but no driver.

“I went to a business with security cameras, hoping to see the footage to aid in the search. After viewing the footage, we decided to move our vehicles out of sight and wait. About 30 minutes later, a man approached the abandoned vehicle and we reacted. He confessed to being the driver involved in the accident, and that he knowingly fled the scene,”said Smit.

He and his partner apprehended the man and handed him to the Saps. “When police arrived they informed us that the victim had died, Smith added.

Port Shepstone Saps also confirmed the man’s arrest.

The spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said: “A case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation. A 34-year-old man appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on a charge of culpable homicide last Thursday. The matter has been remanded to a later date for further investigation.”
