Police seize gun at roadblock

Thirty eight motorists were fined for various road traffic offences.

A high-density roadblock operation led to several successes in Port Edward recently, including the arrest of a 45-year-old man who was found in possession of an unlicensed gun that was linked to a case in Umtata.

The roadblock conducted on the R61 was a joint operation by members of Saps, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Department of Forestry and Fisheries and Road Traffic Inspectorate which targeted errant road users, while ensuring the safety of other drivers.

Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said the man was arrested after his vehicle was stopped and searched. A .38 revolver with five live rounds of ammunition was recovered in the vehicle. “The man was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Mpinge explained,

He said at least 38 motorists were fined for various road traffic offences.

“At Woza Ward in KwaNzimakwe, an illegal liquor outlet was shut down and a hefty fine issued to the owner, as well as a large quantity of liquor confiscated,” Mpinge concluded.
