Sawoti rapist behind bars

The sentencing was done in Scottburgh.

Justice has finally been served to a 41 year old woman who was raped and assaulted on February 11 last year at Kenterton in Sawoti.

Her rapist, Siyabonga Cyril Mkhize (37) was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional Court last week.

“She bravely reported the crime to police, Mkhize was arrested and held in custody throughout his trial,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Sibu Ncane of Margate Saps.

Reports indicate that he bit the victim and threatened to kill her.

“Victims of sexual assault and rape are encouraged to come forward and report this heinous crime even when the suspect is known to them or even related to them,” added Sgt Ncane.

“Their rapist will move on to other victims and will not stop until the victim reports them to police.”

He added that parents, educators and caregivers must be on high alert when children start to act out of character and endeavour to always maintain open communication with children.

“Children will then feel free to report incidences of sexual assault or rape in confidence, and that it was not their fault that they became a victim.”

“The Saps will remain committed to champion the rights of our most vulnerable members in society – our women and children.”
