Man punished for infrastructure damage

Extensive damage was caused at a cellphone tower in Msinsini.

Senzo Jerome Cele (42) was recently sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the Scottburgh Regional Court for damage to essential infrastructure.
According to police, on January 11, he cut a fence which secured a cellphone tower at Nkulu Ward in Msinsini.

“Extensive damage was caused to the door of the container and the safe holding the batteries; the cameras and alarm system were also destroyed,” explained Captain Petros Mpinge, police spokesperson.

“However surveillance footage that was retrieved led to the identification and arrest of Cele a few days later.”
Cele was also linked to a similar case in Umkomaas.

His ten year sentence was suspended for a period of five years on condition that he is not found in contravention of the terms of his sentence. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The investigating officer in this case was Detective Sergeant Mthoko Gumede of Msinsini Detective Service.

“Damage to any infrastructure is a criminal offence and offenders face imprisonment and or other punishments,” warned Captain Mpinge.
