Suspect arrested in Uvongo murder

The 28-year-old old was arrested in Betania recently.

Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the murder of Shalima Ramsanker, who was killed at a family get together in Uvongo recently.

Her murder has sent shockwaves throughout the South Coast and many are calling for stricter policing and law enforcement from authorities.

Forty-four-year-old Shalima of Clare Estate, Durban was on holiday with family at a holiday home in Collins Road, Uvongo when they came under attack at about 04:00.

The family booked a getaway on the South Coast to celebrate an anniversary and a birthday.

They were seated on the verandah when they heard the alarm go off. They heard gunshots on the floor above them, rushed inside for cover and closed the sliding door to the verandah. It is believed that Ms Ramsanker ran and tried to close the kitchen door but she encountered the intruder who fired at her.

Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said the man fled the scene with two bags containing personal belongings and bank cards. “A 28-year-old man was arrested on Monday, February 6 in Betania location. He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder. The case was postponed for further investigation.”

Residents locally and in Durban took to social media to express their shock and posted their tributes and thoughts on crime in South Africa.

Rikus Potgieter, “The taxi gang must move through Manaba and Uvongo, especially at night and in the bushes.”

Vanessa Markandan, “The country is riddled with criminals. Another innocent life taken away. “

Deon Naidoo, “This is really sad for this poor soul to lose her life in this manner. Enough is enough, where is South Africa going with all these crimes and the perpetrators are just roaming around freely waiting and planning for the next innocent victim.”

Marion Van Leeuwen Cillie, “What does the minister of police have to say now. So tragic, on holiday and this happens.”

Uvongo CPF chairperson, Erick Labuschagne urged residents to remember to exercise extreme vigilance at all times during the day and night.

“Ensure security systems are in good working order and are armed. Ensure all safety measures are taken by locking all doors and security barriers. Stow away valuables in a safe place out of sight and contact authorities and security services if you notice any suspicious activity.”

Shalima’s funeral took place at Clare Estate last Sunday.
