Thembalakhe Mawe Nkonyeni (43), who assaulted a motorist and locked him in the boot of his vehicle in Qinabout, Gamalakhe two years ago, was recently found guilty and sentenced.
He was one of three men involved in the incident.
Nkonyeni appeared in the Port Shepstone Regional Court recently and was sentenced to 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and a further year’s imprisonment for kidnapping.
Another man (the first accused in this matter) was sentenced on April 28 last year.
The incident took place on May 11 in 2020, when three men held up the motorist, a man, and a woman in Qinabout, Gamalakhe.
Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said the men assaulted the driver and locked him in the boot of his vehicle, a VW polo, and drove off.
They stole the their cellphones and sped off after firing a shot.
Mpinge said follow-up by police led to the recovery of the car, where they found the man still locked in the boot, but alive.
“Two men were later arrested by police and stood trial for kidnapping and carjacking,” he said.
The investigating officer in this case was Detective Sergeant Mlungisi Jabe of Gamalakhe Detective Service.
