Police advise pensioners to be cautious with money

Money safety tips especially for elderly folk.

The Saps has advised the public, particularly the elderly to be cautious with cash, especially when withdrawing pension money.

Port Shepstone Saps communications officer, Captain Petros Mpinge, stated that criminals and loan sharks rob and abuse the aged when it comes to their pensions.

“Pensioners are strongly advised against loaning money from ‘loan sharks’ and handing over their pension cards and identity documents until the money is paid back,” said Cpt Mpinge.

“In addition, be alert and conscious of your surroundings when using the ATM and never give your card or PIN to anyone, for any reason.”

People are also asked not to write PINs on the card or anything that is kept with the card, to stand close to the ATM and use your body and hand as a shield, to make sure nobody sees you keying in your pin and to never accept help from strangers when using an ATM.

“You should be wary of strangers asking for help, and if you need help, ask a bank official.”
