Taxi chairman gunned down

Taxi violence has been going on for years in the Ugu region.

Mangaye Alson Sikobi (58), the chairman of the long distance Bambanani Taxi Association, died in a hail of bullets on Sunday morning.

This was merely weeks after Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, visited the region in connection with the ongoing killings linked to taxi warfare, vowing to return shortly.

Sikobi was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in Dumezulu, near Port Edward.

The former school teacher was with his 48 year old nephew when they were attacked.

It is believed that his nephew sustained injuries but managed to flee the scene and eventually get help before being rushed to hospital.

Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident.

She said that, on arrival, police found the body of the 58-year-old man, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead on the scene.

Cele had been in the Ugu region in an attempt to restore calm to the situation and find solutions to end the killings.

So far this year, 25 people have died in the taxi industry in the Ugu and Harry Gwala districts.

Port Edward police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. No one has been arrested yet.
