Protecting the environment, protecting your home

Revolutionary roofing ideal for the South Coast climate.

Harvey EcoTile® is proven to withstand the harshest weather.

“As you have probably seen, we have experienced horrendous storms here in the past two weeks. The roof at Jakaranda stood the test,” – Dave Heathcote, Maintenance Trustee.

The first Harvey EcoTile® roof project – Jakaranda Holiday Flats on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast – was completed in 2022. The roof spans 2 200 square metres and is located 20m from the shoreline.

During the severe storms on the KZN South Coast, widespread flooding and destruction occurred, resulting in a state of disaster. The area received more than 300mm of rain in the 24 hours to April 12. This is more than four times the average amount for the entire month of April. Sadly more than 440 people are known to have lost their lives.

Harvey EcoTile® stood up to the test, leak-free and totally intact. As a proudly South African innovation, Harvey EcoTile® was created to protect the environment, and protect your home from nature’s harshest weather.

Innovation for better buildings

Roof tile design has seen minimal innovation in centuries. Thick, heavy concrete or clay tiles are simply stacked on one another and held down by their considerable weight. This in turn dictates strong, heavy and expensive roofing structures to cope with the load. These heavy roof tiles are hard and brittle which results in up to 10% breakages on installation and further threat of damage from hail, wind and being walked upon.

Steel roofs, on the other hand, are prone to corrosion and wind uplift, as was seen with the recent violent storms in KZN. Harvey Roofing Products sought to resolve these functional challenges by solving another pressing issue: sustainability.

How could we improve on archaic roofing systems and at the same time remove harmful plastic waste from the environment?

The breakthrough came in the form of Harvey EcoTile®

By utilising waste material, Harvey EcoTile® is 100% recyclable yet provides superior functional benefits to concrete or clay roof tiles.

Harvey EcoTile’s®  technological design advantage ensures an interlocking, lightweight tile that is low on maintenance, extreme weather proof and virtually unbreakable in normal use.

Specially designed and tested to withstand extreme wind and weather, the product is particularly well suited to the South Coast climate.

Harvey EcoTile®  is entirely manufactured from waste material. Approximately 30% of the product consists of recycled plastic, the equivalent of four two-litre plastic milk bottles per roof tile.

At full production capacity Harvey EcoTile will remove the equivalent of 32 million bottles a year from the environment. Waste mineral, mainly consisting of stone crushing activities is added at 65% of the composition.

It is a waterless product, requiring no water in the production process. In contrast, concrete roof tiles require up to 20% of their weight in water to produce.
