Recycle, reuse, reduce when it comes to waste

These campaigns were aimed at raising awareness to the community at large on the issues of waste management.

Cleanup campaigns by certain government departments have aimed to educate local communities on the importance of waste management.

These government departments collaborated with local municipalities for a series of cleanup campaigns last week.

This included the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), the Department of Forestry Fisheries and Environment (DFFE), Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), plus Ray Nkonyeni, Umzumbe and Umdoni municipalities.

The initiative kicked off with a cleanup in Vusushaba (Ray Nkonyeni Municipality), followed by one in Turton (Umzumbe Municipality), before finishing up with one at Mzimayi River (Umdoni Municipality).

Khanyiso Seyisi, the GCIS regional communication coordinator, said the campaigns were aimed at raising awareness on the issues of waste management.

“The focus was also on raising awareness of the waste management hierarchy, with emphasis on the three Rs – reuse, recycle, reduce,” he said.

He said the campaign also focused on the importance of clearing stormwater drains in order for them to be able to sustain heavy rainwater flow easily.

Seyisi said it was explained to communities that waste generated inland ends up in the ocean, which had a negative impact on marine life.

He said communities are encouraged to start recycling projects to generate money from waste materials, which would also help to care for the environment in the process.
