New home for Gogo (105)

The centenarian thanked the KZN MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho 'KK' Nkosi, saying that she was tired of living in a flooded house every time it rains.

After living with her family in a leaking hut for over 11 years with an unfinished RDP house in her yard, 105-year-old Gogo Mkhungo recently moved into her new home in KwaDweshula under Umzumbe Municipality.

The KZN MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho ‘KK’ Nkosi handed over a fully-furnished RDP house to Mkhungo recently.
The centenarian thanked the MEC saying that she was tired of living in a flooded house every time it rains.

Her daughter, Badumile Ngwazi said she is relieved that they no longer have to live in a hut with a leaking roof.
“They have built my mother a beautiful house, we are happy and this just brings tears to our eyes because we started applying for my mother’s RDP house in 2010,” she said.

MEC Nkosi said Mkhungo was a beneficiary of a disaster intervention after a storm wreaked havoc in the area, leaving many families homeless a couple of years back.

“The plight of the centenarian had come to the notice of a provincial commercial radio station which relayed Mkhungo’s details to the MEC at the beginning of December. Now that she is able to move into her new home, we hope that her children and grandchildren will take care of her. For us, we thank God for keeping her alive. Her being alive motivates us to do right and to do our best in terms of providing services.”

After handing over the RDP house in Umzumbe, MEC Nkosi joined Ward 28 councillor Bekithemba Zulu for Operation Siyahlola.
During a recent community meeting in Ward 28 at the ZG Hall in Gamalakhe, concerns regarding the Gamalakhe Rectification Project were raised.

Most residents felt their homes were in a worse state before the rectification project was implemented.
For Operation Siyahlola, Nkosi was accompanied by Clr Zulu, former Ray Nkonyeni municipal manager who is now the chief director of KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements and Public Works, Max Mbili, and Ugu District acting director Mvuzo Yengwa.
