Mayoral roadblock welcomes holidaymakers

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality acting mayor Sibusiso Shange said it worried him that tourists from other provinces had drowned during their visits to the South Coast.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) acting mayor Sibusiso Shange has urged holidaymakers not to swim at night or at places that have been declared unsafe.Shange was speaking during a mayoral roadblock near Hibberdene recently.

He said it worried him that tourists from other provinces had drowned during their visits to the South Coast.
“I remember an incident of tourists who arrived late at night and they decided to go to the beach, and they drowned. We urge our holidaymakers to swim in areas that have been declared safe, areas that have lifeguards and not to swim at night,” said Shange.

He added that the mayoral roadblock was supported by SAPS, RNM Law Enforcement, Hlokomela and South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE).

The acting mayor said it was important to invite Hlokomela as they are behind the taxi industry.
“We generally ask them to be part of our programmes for transparency. Mostly, when it comes to taxis, we sometimes get accused that we do not treat taxi drivers well. Which is why we invited Hlokomela so that when we say this taxi is not roadworthy, Hlokomela would be able to attest to that,” said Shange.

He added that as RNM they are excited to host holidaymakers. Shange said the municipality is divided into two types of areas (rural and urban).
He said in rural areas, they have beautiful places such as the Oribi Gorge and KwaXolo Caves. He added that in urban areas, they have Blue Flag beaches that visitors can enjoy.
