Missing elderly women found dead

The women were last seen on Women's Day.

The KZN community is mourning the loss of two local elderly women who were murdered and found in Umgababa recently.

Sophie Xulu (70) and Zanele Mabuso (60) were last seen on Women’s Day, preparing for a function which was being hosted at a crèche they worked at in Umgababa.

Thorough investigations by the Umkomaas Detectives, Durban Search and Rescue and eThekwini District Task Team pointed the police to a shallow grave just outside the fence of the crèche where the bodies were discovered.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a security officer based at the school informed their families that Xulu and Mabuso were seen boarding a white Toyota Avanza with a GP registration on the day of their disappearance.

He alleged that they proceeded to a supermarket to make purchases for the school function.

Xulu’s grandson contacted RUSA on August 15 requesting assistance to locate the elderly women.

The bodies were found last Friday (August 18), and according to Colonel Robert Netshiunda from Saps KZN Media Centre, the two victims were found buried with plastic over their heads and were tied with a rope.

A 60 year old man believed to be a security guard from the crèche, has been arrested.

The suspect appeared in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week on two counts of murder.

The case was remanded to August 28 for a formal bail application, and Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, NPA regional spokesperson said that the state will oppose the application.
