Educationist retires after exceptional career

As a subject specialist he was involved in both setting and marking matric papers.

After an illustrious career in education spanning over 42 years, Ruvendren (Ravi) Pather of Port Shepstone retired just over a week ago.

Having majored in history and economics, he transformed the lives of thousands of learners over the years.
Ravi started teaching in 1981 at Phoenix Secondary, then moved to Westham Secondary and Shakaskraal Secondary.

School management acknowledged his incredible work ethics and rewarded him accordingly with complex responsibilities.

Like most educators of the time, Ravi also immersed himself in the extra-mural development of learners, and was involved in both soccer duties and theatrical productions.

He played a prominent role in union activities and was an active member of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union since its inception.

He was promoted to head of department in 1989 and continued to teach until he was promoted as a Subject Advisor in the Ugu District in 1996.

In his capacity as Curriculum Advisor, he provided professional support to Further Education and Training (history) and General Education and Training (social sciences) phase educators.

He helped to implement the many educational changes that came with the new dispensation. As a subject specialist he was involved in both setting and marking matric papers. Ravi was in the forefront of compiling history teachers’ guides to transform its teaching and assessment strategies.

At the time of his retirement, he held the post of Deputy Chief Education Specialist: Social Sciences – Teaching and Learning Services-General Education and Training.

Outside of teaching, he travelled extensively around the world and used these experiences to improve himself in both his work and community life.

He lives by the mantra of Malala Yousafzai, ‘you are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream’.
Ravi is well-known for his meticulous work and his witty sense of humour at social forums.

He is grateful to God Almighty for blessing him with good health and prosperity during his life journey; his family for their patience and unconditional support and all the people who shaped his life skills during his memorable career.
