Call for comments on new proposed water pipeline

Anyone that has an interest in attending a public meeting to discuss the proposed new pipeline will need to inform Nemai Consulting in writing by May 31.

Ugu District Municipality has proposed a new water pipeline of approximately 3.4km from the St Helen’s Rock abstraction works to the Bhobhoyi Water Treatment Works (WTW).

The proposed pipeline is located in wards 12, 14, 23 and 34 of the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.
Nemai Consulting (Pty) Ltd, was appointed as the Environmental Impact Assessment practitioner which consists of civil and structural engineers and environmental specialists.

There is currently only one functioning pipeline delivering water to the storage dam at Bhobhoyi WTW, which has limited capacity on its own and which requires complete system shutdown for ongoing maintenance. The bifurcation pipework to and from the storage dam is prone to leaks and thus ongoing maintenance shutdowns, and risk of serious failure.

To achieve the licenced 88 Ml/d on average, the whole system requires the capacity to deliver up to 108 M/d at times in order to maintain this average. The existing pipeline from the St Helen’s Rock abstraction works to the existing Bhobhoyi WTW is unable to do this.

The existing pipeline and proposed pipeline will therefore need to accommodate a combined flow of 1.25 m3/s.
The draft Basic Assessment Report has been lodged for public review at the municipal library (civic centre) in Port Shepstone from May 19 until June 20. The report can also be downloaded from https://nemai.co.za/downloads/
Written comments on the draft Basic Assessment Report need to be forwarded to donavanh@nemai.co.za by June 20.
