Ugu begins borehole installations

More than 55 boreholes will be installed in the district.

Ugu District Municipality has an allocation of R20 million to deal with water issues, as a long term solution.
Acting mayor, Mandla Chiya said the municipality has started installation of 20 boreholes which will operate via a solar power system.
He said overall 55 boreholes will be installed in the district.
“Whether there is electricity or not, people will be getting water through these boreholes.”
Funds have also been secured to replace old pipes. The acting mayor said this project has started.
Chiya said that there is an issue with the Umtamvuna system which supplies water in parts of Ramsgate, Izingolweni, Kwaxolo and other areas.
“We were able to get R14 million funding from Cogta which was given to Eskom, to upgrade the electricity at the station.”

He also said the reservoirs around the area have been completed and ready to store water, but the issue is that they are still negotiating with the Eastern Cape leadership because people from Winnie Madikizela Mandela have been raising grievances.
“We have now requested our provincial leadership to intervene and help us to facilitate the issues.”
Chiya said as soon as that is sorted out all the areas will be receiving water.
