Roadshows expose harsh realities of drug and alcohol abuse

The 60 minutes show motivates people to recover.

Audience members at Umkomaas Primary School were moved by the educational and touching performances given by the 60 Minutes Fight Against Drug & Alcohol NPC’s crew on Monday evening.

This was the crew’s final dress rehearsal open to the public, ahead of the actual roadshows scheduled for the rest of the week.

These shows were created to share the harsh realities of drug and alcohol abuse and to let people know that help is always available and that it is in fact possible to recover.

The 60 minutes production featured in-patients of The Cedars Addictions Treatment Centre who shared some of their personal experiences with addiction.

A theatre-style play was done showing the consequences of a pupils drug and alcohol addiction, and there were multi-talented entertainers who sang and danced in-between scenes.

It is believed that the production crew had roughly two months to put this show together which was clearly enjoyed by all who attended the final dress rehearsal as indicated by the cheers and standing ovations.

After the show, one of the audience members mentioned that she had seen two other shows by the crew a few years ago before the pandemic and was thrilled to watch everyone again.

“It really is motivating to see these guys up there when you have or know of someone in the family struggling with problems like them,” she said.

“It just brings about hope.”

The production will visit Umkomaas Secondary School, Queensburgh Girls High School, Queensburgh High School, Umzinto Prison (the school) and Sappi Saiccor during the week.

During the production, the crowd was entertained by song and dance.
