Snare Aware group is at hand

Snare Aware is a registered NPO founded in July, 2020.

It is made up of a group of volunteers that dedicate their spare time to sweeping and removing snares from greenbelts around towns, conservancies and game reserves in the KwaZulu-Natal area.

The group, which predominantly operates along the South Coast, has also travelled around KZN to lend a hand and experience where needed.

The team recently tackled the southern boundary of Umdoni park after reports of snares being found in the area.

Multiple pathways were observed with frequent human manipulation of the bush to funnel wildlife into snare setups.

The team removed six snares on the day in this southern corner. The materials used were steel cable and one was made from rope.

They then tackled an area in the north-western corner of the park where, thankfully, there was no signs of human activity and no snares were found.

Umdoni is home to a multitude of wildlife including, grey and blue duiker, bushbuck, bushpig, porcupine, genet and various species of mongoose, which are all in danger of being trapped in these deadly snares.
