Police confiscate 15 guns, hand grenade in Shelly Beach

15 firearms, a hand grenade and numerous rounds of ammunition was found at the Shelly Beach home.

On noticing the number of firearms, ammunition and a hand grenade that her husband had stashed at their home, a Shelly Beach woman took out a protection order against him.

Police arrested the 56-year-old man at his premises in Shelly Beach last Wednesday. He was in possession of a hand grenade, 15 firearms of which two were unlicensed and 5 431 rounds of ammunition.

The court ordered and instructed the police to remove all firearms from the respondent. While assisting police at his house, the man informed them that his revolver was on the couch under a blanket.

He then took police into his bedroom where a shotgun was found. He then handed police keys to a safe and on inspection they found two firearms that were not in his name and he did not produce licences for them. On further inspection a M26 hand grenade was found in the safe.

After a further search throughout the premises, police recovered different caliber of ammunition. A single barrel shotgun was also found in the room where the safe was stored. Police also noted that the safe was not bolted onto the wall.

Police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident stating that Port Shepstone police went to a house to serve the man with a protection order.

“The protection order stated that the firearms must be seized by police. Police executed the order, the house was searched and out of the 15 firearms that were found, two were unlicensed. A hand grenade was also found. Police also confiscated 13 licenced firearms as well as numerous rounds of ammunition.”

The man appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court last Friday, and the case was postponed to July 20 for a formal bail application. He remains in police custody.
