Fight continues against drugs, substance abuse

There can never be too much education around these issues.

Coastal Resource Centre, a local community-based, non-profit organisation based in Port Edward, conducted an awareness event on drugs and substance abuse, to mark the recent International Day against Drugs, Substance Abuse and Trafficking.

The event, held at the Port Edward taxi rank, was attended by a group of drug users in Port Edward, the Her Voice AGYW clubs from Braemar and Thongasi.

Young people came from communities as far afield as Zikhuba, Seaview and Mzamba in the Eastern Cape.

The was supported by Aidsfonds as part of the Love Alliance programme for engaging with people who use drugs.

It was part of an advocacy plan to fight violence, stigma and discrimination against certain sectors of society, and also to educate young people on the ill-effects of drugs and substance abuse.

Speakers at the event included a social worker from the department of social development (Gamalakhe), ward councillors from Ray Nkonyeni ward 1 and 10, a team from Laqhakaza Iphara Recovery (NPO), a representative from the Port Edward Community Police Forum, and officers from Port Edward Saps.
