Intruder shot dead in home invasion

The man threatened to kill the home owner with a knife.

A home invasion led to an intruder being shot and killed at a house in Sunwich Port, last Thursday.

It is believed that a 66-year-old resident got up to go to the bathroom at about 03.45 when he saw a man in the lounge area. The home owner closed the bedroom door and soon afterwards heard the suspect outside his bedroom. It is believed the resident fired a shot through the door.

The resident came out of the room to check if the intruder had left, but saw the man holding a knife in the lounge .

“The intruder drew a knife and threatened to kill the home owner. The victim fired shots towards the suspect who sustained fatal wounds and was declared dead at the scene. It was later discovered that two laptops had been stolen from the house,” said police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge.

It is believed that entry into the house was gained by forcing open the lounge window. Police also found bolt cutters in the yard.

An inquest case docket has been opened, and is being investigated by Southport detectives.
