Woman stabbed to death in Mthwalume

This incident has frightened the community and brought back bad memories of the previous incidents.

The Mthwalume area has made headlines again after a woman was found dead with multiple stab wounds in the sugarcane field near Msinsini.

Two years ago Mthwalume was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, after six women were found dead in sugarcane fields.

Delisile Shozi (42), a mother of three went missing from her home in Mthwalume in Mahwaqa area last Monday.

She was found dead last Friday.

This incident has frightened the community and brought back bad memories of the previous incidents.

Shozi’s niece Thobeka Ncwane said the family suspects a shop owner who is a foreigner, for her death.

“After our search for her and filing a missing person’s report last Wednesday, I received a call on Friday afternoon that she had been found.”

Ncwane said she left the house to meet with this man (the shop owner) and never returned.

Community activist Hlengiwe Gambushe said they are shaken by the incident and she is unhappy how the case is being handled.

“In 2020 we had an incident where women were killed and the way that case ended was not satisfying, that is why we have people who still kill women here.”

Gambushe said she would like to see the Saps doing more.

“The minister of police had said there will be patrols in the area but we do not see that happening.”

Ward councillor Sbonelo Maphumulo said it seems like history keeps repeating itself.

“Not so long ago a similar incident happened, a woman was killed in her house and that case is still in court.”

Maphumulo said he would like to see the government’s intervention. He added that he hopes the police will play its part to find the suspect and put him behind bars.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the incident and said a a case of murder is being investigated by Hibberdene police.

No arrests have been made.
