Port Shepstone police appeals to the public to be aware of people intent on defrauding them or scamming them out of their personal property.
Police spokesperson, Captain Petros Mpinge said: “Be aware of persons who wish to use your personal cellphone to make an emergency call while you are out shopping. The fraudster will leave a shopping basket or trolley with unpaid purchases for you to safeguard while they pretend to make a call and walk off with your cellphone.”
He added that the public must also be aware that a bank will not call to verify your pin and other confidential information. If you are uncomfortable with giving details even to a legitimate caller, rather go to the bank personally to update details.
“Be cautious about notifications that you have won a competition, especially if you did not enter any. Do not respond with any personal information,” he warned.
