Seal picked up Marina Beach taken for health check at uShaka Marine World

Along with staff from uShaka, local lifeguards assisted in the safe removal of the marine visitor.

A sub-Antarctic fur seal has had a busy week travelling up and down the coastal strip.

The seal was initially monitored and allowed to rest at Winklespruit and then relocated by Marine Strandings Network (uShaka) to Mpenjati Marine Reserve on Monday this week.

However, the seal landed up on Marina Beach yesterday (Wednesday), and had to be removed.

The team from uShaka Marine World, Santosh Bachoo (a Senior Marine Ecologist from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife) and local lifeguards assisted the seal.

It was safely crated and will be given a health check by the uShaka Marine World team.

Mpenjati Conservancy thanked the Trafalgar lifeguards for responding to the call for assistance. It was an impressive display of teamwork with minimal distress to the seal.

The Mpenjati Conservancy is a volunteer community organisation registered with Conservancies KZN (the KZN Conservancies Association) which is the largest and most active voluntary conservation organisation in South Africa. New members are always welcome!
