Humanitarian aid brings blessings after floods

Over 450 families were assisted locally and support was also extended further north.

The Rapid Response Team made up of humanitarian and welfare organisations based in Port Shepstone came together on short notice, to help the many affected by the recent floods.

The team is coordinated by Selvan Chetty and supported by Moulana Mohammed Moola from the Islamic Welfare Trust, Jessica Naicker of Ignite Revolution, Aadil Moola from Business Against Crime CBD CPF, Amara Hansbhai of Gift of the Givers, Fathima Moosa of Port Shepstone Station CPF and many privately owned businesses on the South Coast.

The team responded to the crisis quickly, and reached out to the most affected areas first.

The team worked with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality that highlighted some of the affected areas and people who were seriously in need of help.

The Rapid Response Team handed out groceries, water, mattresses and blankets. Coming together and making this a success were volunteers from local businesses, the tourism department and the local community showing their support, some working late into the night.

Besides working together and providing food parcels the team was instrumental in helping many families divert water from their homes, and also helped in many areas to clear the roadways from fallen trees and sandbanks making it accessible to motorists.

Over 450 families were assisted locally and support was also extended to Umdoni, Isipingo, Umzinto and Umkomaas via the Rapid Response team.

“We are thankful to all our volunteers and sponsors who came together at short notice to help the team reach out to many desperate families locally to Durban. As coordinator I am thankful, you are the true spirit of Ubuntu,” said Chetty.
