South Coasters beg for water to be restored

However, a close friend of the woman said that when she checked on her, her surgery had to be postponed.

A 67-year-old woman from Hibberdene recently needed to have her a toe amputated as a matter of urgency, because it had turned septic.

She was at admitted to a hospital on the South Coast last week.

However, a close friend of the woman said that when she checked on her, her surgery had to be postponed.

“The reason for my friend not having surgery was a water issue at the hospital. She was in agony because of pain. Her surgery was postponed every day and rescheduled for the next day. Every day she was told that no operations can be done because there is no water. Why did the hospital not transfer the patients in urgent need of operations to other hospitals if there’s no water?” asked the friend.

The elderly woman did have surgery last Friday and was due to have another one on Tuesday this week.

Her situation took a turn for the worse and she died on Tuesday morning. However, her friend said that her death was not caused by her surgery being postponed or the hospital not having water.

No response was received from the hospital before going to print.

Lisa Duncalf (87) of Baker Road, Margate who is battling with cancer and has difficulty walking has written to Ugu District Municipality begging for water.

“Sir I have difficulty walking and my health is not in a good state. Living with age and cancer is a daily battle. I am humbly asking for your assistance please. I am living alone and without water since October 2021. Please help me to get water. I beg you Sir. Please help an old woman to at least have basic rights and a bit of dignity,” wrote Duncalf.

The Herald has received desperate calls from residents, mostly elderly, living in a complex in Margate on Wartski Drive. About 60 residents have been facing weeks of no water due to two burst pipes in the area that have not been fixed as yet.
