8550 suspects nabbed during police operations in KZN during April
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said drugs such as heroin, mandrax powder, cocaine and dagga were also seized.
Police in KwaZulu-Natal have embarked on a number of multi-disciplinary operations targeting a variety of crimes taking place in different communities.
These operations have been put in place to strategically combat crime in all districts across the province.
From April 1 until April 30 police officers across the province arrested 8550 people for various crimes:
A number of arrests were made for contact crimes which include:
- 224 for murder,
- 81 for robberies,
- 209 for rape,
- 992 for assaults,
- 12 for carjacking.
Some 2099 arrests were also made for stock theft.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said police also recovered drugs such as heroin, mandrax powder, cocaine and dagga.
During this period, 611 suspects were arrested for liquor-related offences.
Police seized 255 illegal firearms with 3350 rounds of ammunition in operations during the same period.
All firearms seized have been subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they were used in any other crimes in the country.
Police management in Kwazulu-Natal has commended the diligence and persistence of police officers as many of these arrests were effected during a period where the province had experienced a natural disaster.
During this period, police and security companies intercepted many criminal groups as they were prowling the streets with the intention of committing crimes.
